About

Allison Johnson

My Teaching Philosophy

My priorities as a teacher focus on connection, growth, and curiosity. Always, connection accompanies content; I will meet your students wherever they are, adjusting rigor to best support their needs.

Educational research has long demonstrated that active learning engenders critical thinking and problem solving skills, while also helping students master academic outcomes.*

Active learning involves discussion, choice, collaborative problem solving, reflection, and agency. Students learn best when they work with instructors who demonstrate genuine care and respect for them both in and out of the classroom setting, which is why homeschooling is such a valuable privilege!

Classes

English Language Arts classes are offered in twelve-week semesters in the spring and fall. Each class meets live once per week, with out-of-class work assigned to keep students learning and engaged. Classes are housed on Google Classroom and hosted on Google Meet.

NEW this fall: Weird History! These 4-week mini-courses will introduce your learner to strange and mysterious episodes in history.

4-week-long Poetry Exploration courses are also available starting in September 2026. Each session will closely examine a particular poetry movement or era.

All courses are aligned to Pennsylvania state standards, though learners from all states are welcome.

My approach to teaching is relational and nurturing. Classes are lively and engaging, with lots of space for connection, discovery, and fun!

Tutoring

If you are looking for a personalized learning experience for your learner, or think they might benefit from some one-on-one help, private tutoring is available!

We can meet once or twice (maybe to help your student with their college application essay, work on reading skills, or practice writing), or can schedule more regular sessions tailored to their needs and interests.

Pricing begins at $30/hour.

Evaluations

Congrats on completing your homeschool year!

Evaluations for Pennsylvania students in grades 1–12 are available at my house in Monroeville on various dates in May and June. If none of the available days work for you, please email me and we can try to find another option!

Evaluations last 15–20 minutes and consist of a review of portfolio, as well as a brief and gentle interview with your student. I conduct short form evaluations, so you will have all of the documentation you need to submit to your home district shortly after the evaluation is done.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost for classes?

Semester-long classes are $300. Four-week-long classes are $50. Sibling discounts are available! Payments are due before the first day of classes via Venmo or PayPal.

How do classes work?

After registering, you and your student will receive an email containing the course syllabus and more details. You and your student will also be added to the course-specific Google Classroom, where you can access course resources, submit work, and engage with classmates.

When should I register?

Registration for each course closes one week before the start date. For four-week-long classes, you may enroll in several at once or one at a time. Classes must have at least 3 students enrolled to run.

What is the typical time commitment for students?

For semester-long classes, students can expect to spend 1–3 hours per week completing work outside of class, plus one hour in live class per week. This time commitment can vary based on what kind of assignments are in process at different points throughout the term.

4-week-long classes are fluid; resources are provided and students and their parents may select which assignments work best for them. While students are expected to engage with class materials and attend live class, they will submit their chosen work to their parent rather than to me.
